This five-frame animation depicts the eruption of Io’s Tvashtar volcano with the cloud of debris extending almost 330km above the moon’s surface. The pictures were captured by NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft as it flew past Jupiter on February 26, 2007 en route to Pluto.

The bottom of the Slinky remains at the same position because upwards-pulling tension in the spring cancels out the downwards-pulling force of gravity. When the top of the Slinky is released, gravity pulls the top of the Slinky downwards until it has fully collapsed (no more tension) and falls to the ground. The center of gravity of the Slinky falls with the same gravitational acceleration experienced by any dropped object.

A chemical garden is a common chemistry experiment where a solid metal salt (CoCl2) is added to a solution of sodium silicate (Na2SiO3). The result is a growing plant-like salt crystal that can take on a variety of intricate designs.

In normal atmospheric conditions, air resistance plays a significant role in limiting the maximum speed (terminal velocity) at which an object can fall. However, when dropped in vacuum (no air), any dropped object will experience the same rate of acceleration, regardless of mass.

This map from the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research depicts the global propagation of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that devastated parts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India. Over 230,000 people were killed by the tsunami caused by a magnitude 9.3 earthquake (3rd largest ever recorded) off the coast of Sumatra. The tsunami inundated coastal communities with waves crested up to 100ft high and is considered one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history.

The Ruben’s Tube is an antique physics apparatus for visualizing acoustic standing waves in a tube. A perforated pipe filled with flammable gas is connected to a speaker and the escaping gas ignited. As the speaker frequency shifts, the height of the flames shifts to match the resulting standing wave pressure.
This demonstration extends the Ruben’s tube in a second dimension by using a perforated metal sheet and two speakers. The resulting flame patterns are similar to the famous Chladni figures.
