Elephant Toothpaste

9 June 2015

The Elephant Toothpaste experiment earned its name from the foamy byproduct of the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Mixing yeast with hydrogen peroxide catalyzes its decomposition into water and oxygen gas via an exothermic reaction. Adding some dish soap causes the explosion of foam! This is a great experiment to try at home since the only byproducts are water, oxygen, and soap.

Oxygen created by underwater photosynthesis

8 June 2015

Pondweed is an aquatic plant that uses photosynthesis to make sugars from carbon dioxide and water with the assistance of sunlight. The tiny bubbles emanating from the plant is oxygen gas, one of the byproducts of photosynthesis.

Used batteries bounce higher compared to new batteries

6 June 2015

As disposable batteries age, the electrolyte that separates the anode and the cathode is consumed. Electrolyte is a chemical medium that facilitates the flow of electrical charge between the two terminals. As a battery ages, the electrolyte transitions from being springy (inhibits bouncing) to becoming stiff (allows bouncing). So while battery bouncing isn’t a perfect test for percent charge remaining, it should help separate that new and old battery you just mixed up.

Retreat of the Jorge Montt Glacier

5 June 2015

The Jorge Montt Glacier is a tidewater glacier located in Chile near the mouth of the Pascua River. This timelapse between February 2010 and January 2011 from the Centro de Estudios Científicos depicts the retreat of the glacier due to climate change. Over the course of one year the glacier calving front retreated an estimated 1km.

The Pharaoh's Serpent

4 June 2015

Mercury(II) thiocyanate is a white powder formerly used in pyrotechnics to produce the effect known as the Pharaoh ‘s Serpent. This name stems from the large, winding “snake” of carbon nitride that forms when the powder is ignited. The toxicity of the powder and its combustion byproducts eventually ended its use in pyrotechnic displays.

Earth's atmosphere

4 June 2015

This timelapse was taken by Terry Virts who is an astronaut currently residing on the International Space Station. You can see the faint outline of Earth’s atmosphere protecting us from the harsh vacuum of space.

If you look closely you can see two satellites streaking across the sky.

Ferrofluid on magnetized screw

3 June 2015

Ferrofluid is a liquid that becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field and is typically composed of ferromagnetic (iron) particles suspended in oil. When exposed to a magnet, the particles align with the surrounding magnetic field. The complex orientation of the ferrofluid visualizes the magnetic field around the magnetized screw and nut.

Vibrating (and recording) water stream at same frequency

2 June 2015

This fantastic demonstration of aliasing uses a falling stream of water being vibrated at 24Hz by a speaker. Since the video is being recorded at 24fps, the water appears to be standing still.

Adjusting the speaker frequency up to 25Hz would make the water appear to slowly fall downwards whereas reducing it to 23Hz would make it appear to be falling upwards.

Aliasing is the same phenomenon that causes tire rims to appear stationary or move backwards.
