The Ruben’s Tube is an antique physics apparatus for visualizing acoustic standing waves in a tube. A perforated pipe filled with flammable gas is connected to a speaker and the escaping gas ignited. As the speaker frequency shifts, the height of the flames shifts to match the resulting standing wave pressure.
This demonstration extends the Ruben’s tube in a second dimension by using a perforated metal sheet and two speakers. The resulting flame patterns are similar to the famous Chladni figures.
