Refraction is the bending of light that occurs at the interface of two different mediums (i.e. water and glass). The water in the glass acts as a lens that focuses light, which is why the arrow appears to reverse itself. The reversal of the arrow will only occur if the glass is located at least a focal length (of the water + glass “lens”) away from the arrows.

Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt and the only dwarf planet in the inner Solar System. It was first discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi who thought it was a planet. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft has been in orbit around Ceres since March 6, 2015 where it captured these images.

Nitrogen Triiodide is an extremely sensitive explosive compound that, when dry, can be detonated by the lightest of touches. It is only safe to transport nitrogen triiodide when wet. Upon detonation, a cloud of purple iodine vapor is released.

To the naked eye, the Sun appears like a yellow ball of light in the sky. But to specialized telescopes that see beyond the visible spectrum of light, it looks vastly different. By studying the Sun at different wavelengths, we gain more information about its composition and behavior.

The green dots are Trojan Asteroids and occupy one of Jupiter ‘s two stable Lagrangian points located 60-degrees before and after the planet. The pink dots are Hildian Asteroids that dynamically move between one of three positions directly opposite Jupiter or 60-degrees before and after the planet.

The triple point of a substance is the temperature and pressure at which the three phases (gas, liquid, and solid) can exist simultaneously. Cyclohexane ‘s triple point occurs at 6.33°C and 5.388kPa. This sample of cyclohexane is moving around the triple point and rapidly transitioning between the different states of matter.

In roughly 4 billion years our Milky Way Galaxy and nearby Andromeda Galaxy will collide and merge over the course of several billion years. However, the immense distance between individual stars makes actual stellar collisions extremely unlikely.

We know that F=ma (Force = Mass * Acceleration) per Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion. Because the ball is fired out of the cannon at 50mph in the opposite direction the 50mph truck is moving, the net acceleration is zero. This means the ball experiences no horizontal force after being launched and therefore falls straight to the ground (per Newton ‘s 1st Law of Motion).

Notice how the water droplet expands as it freezes. This lowered density when frozen is one of the many unique properties of water and what allows it to float when placed in liquid water.
