Fluorescein is a dark orange synthetic organic compound that is widely used as a fluorescent tracer dye. When dissolved in water or alcohol, it gains the ability to fluoresce when exposed to ultraviolet light (494nm absorption maxima). The resulting fluorescence has an emission maxima around 512nm (green light). If the local concentration of fluorescein becomes too high, it will actually self-quench and result in a murky yellow emission. This can be seen occurring at the bottom of the glass.
Fluorescein is also known as the color additive Yellow No. 7 , is used to dye antifreeze green, and was used to dye the Chicago River green on St. Patrick’s Day.

Lenz’s Law states than when an induced current flows, its direction is always such that it will oppose the change that produced it. This means that a falling magnet will induce a current in the copper pipe (non-magnetic). This induced current creates a magnetic field opposing the changing magnetic fields of the falling magnet. This results in the magnet being repelled and falling much more slowly than a plain iron ball.
Lenz’s Law is a byproduct of Faraday’s Law of Induction that describes how a magnetic field will interact with an electric circuit to produce an electromotive force. Faraday’s Law is in turn a core component of Maxwell’s Equations that describe electromagnetism.

Static electricity is the imbalance of electric charges within or on the surface of a material. A cheap electrostatic generator can be used to produce static electricity with high voltage and low continuous current. The charge imbalance between the hand and the particles of sand cause them to become repelled from one another.

Here’s another look at the steam explosion that occurs when molten salt (sodium chloride melts at 1,400°F) is poured into water. Footage was acquired at 7,000fps to provide a super slow-motion view of the rapid expansion of steam. If you look closely at the edges of the expanding gases, you can see salt crystallizing before dissolving in the water.

Table salt (sodium chloride) enters its liquid state at temperatures above 1,400°F. When a crucible of molten salt is poured into a tank of water, it causes an explosion of steam and water. It is thought that the Leidenfrost Effect is partially responsible for the first few moments of this violent physical reaction as the molten salt rapidly boils water in its immediate vicinity to form a sheath of steam. However, the immense heat quickly overcomes this barrier and rapidly expands outwards causing a stream explosion.

Cochlear implants are surgically-inserted electronic devices that provide a sense of sound to a person who is deaf or severely hard of hearing in both ears. The implant bypasses the normal hearing process via an array of electrodes that are placed directly in the cochlea to stimulate the cochlear nerve based on sounds transmitted from an external microphone.
This X-Ray footage shows the electrode array being inserted into a patient’s cochlea while under general anesthesia. The cochlea is a spiral-shaped cavity in the inner ear and contains the sensory organ for hearing.

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is an extremely corrosive acid and very powerful dehydrating agent. Historically known as the “oil of vitriol,” it is widely used in the chemical industry. In the household, it is a common ingredient in drain cleaners.
Here the sulfuric acid undergoes an intense dehydration reaction with the cellulose in the sponge by removing hydroxyl groups (-OH) to form water molecules.

Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, unveiled the latest design of their Atlas robot earlier this week. Atlas is a bipedal model designed for use both indoors and outdoors and specializes in mobile manipulation The robot is electrically powered, hydraulically actuated, and uses LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles and navigate terrain.
The self-righting mechanism demonstrated here is important for returning the robot to its upright and standing position. Bipedal models are easier to knock over than quadruped designs. Boston Dynamics has a dedicated robot abuser who will be a major catalyst for the inevitable robot uprising following the creation of Skynet.

Dust devils are strong, well-formed whirlwinds that can reach tens of meters in diameter and more than a thousand meters tall. Unlike tornadoes, dust devils are relatively harmless and rarely approach similar wind speeds. They are caused by swirling updrafts under sunny conditions during fair weather.
Dust devils go by many different names depending on your location on the planet. In the Southwestern United States, the terms “dancing devil,” “sand auger,” or “dust whirl” might be used. The Navajo call them “chindi” and believe they are ghosts or spirits of the dead. In Australia they are called “willy-willy” or “whirly-whirly.” In the Middle-East they are referred to as “djin.”

The thermal tiles of the Space Shuttle had to handle the enormous heat of atmospheric re-entry in order to protect the spacecraft and its crew. Despite being heated to over 2200°F and still glowing hot, the material is cool enough to touch after only a few seconds. This is possible because of the material’s extremely low thermal conductivity (contrary to what is stated in the source video).
The corners and edges of the cube quickly cool off after being removed from the oven because of radiative and convective heat transfer. However, because heat does not conduct efficiently within the block, it does not reheat the periphery very quickly. This allows the cube to be handled with bare hands while the center is still glowing hot.
